SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Girabox’, ‘More Dark’, and Today’s Other New Releases and Sales – Touch Arcade

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for November 27th, 2020. Today is Black Friday! There are a lot more sales to check out today, but Ill be honest: not many of them are as juicy as the ones we saw earlier this week. Such is life, I suppose. There are also a bunch of new releases to look at, with the majority of them being on the cheaper side of things. Hey, its nice to see someone thinking about our precarious game budgets for once! Lets look at what weve got today.

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Yes, I like this. Its a straightforward puzzle game where you need to reach the goal in each area by rotating the stage and letting gravity do the work. Each rotation is counted, and the idea is to get where you need to go using the fewest amount of spins. There are quite a few stages to get through, and the overall experience is nice and chill without being too simple. Toss in a great price and youve got an easy pick-up for puzzle fans or those looking for a bit of affordable enjoyment.

Uhbuddy. Its darker, not more dark. Your welcome. All kidding aside, More Dark is the latest release from the fine folks at Ratalaika. Its a puzzle-platformer with 60 levels where you need to round up escaped prisoners by any possible means. Those means often take the form of special items that you collect along the way. You keep getting new options as you go, helping to keep the gameplay fresh and the stages challenging all the way through. Not too shabby at all, and the price is more than reasonable.

I think so much about this game is great, except the part where you play it. I love the neon-drenched look, and the soundtrack is pure fire. Very cool synth stuff. You get lots of tracks, twenty in total, and plenty of cars. It feels like its aiming for that classic European arcade racer style, and it even has a splitscreen mode for you and another player. But like many games that pay homage to that era, Electro Ride just doesnt feel right in its mechanics. The rubber-banding is way over the top, and something about how the cars move just feels off. Its not a bad game, but it gets so much right that its disappointing that its merely decent in terms of gameplay.

Kind of an abstract top-down twin-stick shooter game, you take on endless waves of enemies in a fully destructible city. There are fifteen different weapons to make use of, six different types of enemies to use them on, and a bunch of power-ups and skills to take advantage of in order to survive just a little longer. Theres a local co-op multiplayer option here for up to three players at once, so thats neat. Not a bad little game at all, very much in the vein of some 10tons games like Crimsonland. I really love the presentation, and while you really need to get lucky with random item appearances to survive very long, its still quite satisfying.

Its a top-down racing game that may or may not be paying homage to Micro Machines. Its hard to tell sometimes. You get 20 tracks, 5 tournaments, 16 cars, and an assortment of items to use against the other racers. In addition to the main Tournament Mode, theres a Quick Race mode where you can just jump into a race. Up to four players can get in on the fun in splitscreen local multiplayer. And thats all I really have to say about this one. Its cheap, and maybe thats enough for you.

This is a cooperative puzzle game that is best played with a few friends or family members in the local multiplayer mode. You have to work together to collect Orbees, build gadgets, and use them to survive. If you dont help each other out, no one gets out alive. Alrighty. Theres also a story mode with 30 levels to keep you busy if you dont have anyone to play with. Its cute and quite the good time in multiplayer, but not nearly as interesting when youre on your own. Still, its a fair price and its not like the game is hiding the fact that youre meant to enjoy it with others. A solid enough choice for your next gaming party. Those are a thing, right? Like fancy cheese parties, but everyone plays games and no one wears monocles except weird cousin Craig?

Well, this is pretty clearly inspired by Overcooked. Its not as good as that game, at least in my opinion, but its still rather fun. If youve burnt out on Overcooked and its sequel, youll probably appreciate Lets Cook Together. And while the broad concept is similar, there are some differences in how the games play. More food throwing, for one thing. Only two players can play this one at once because of how its set up, and youll have to do it locally as there is no online multiplayer. Some enjoyable alternate modes add some longevity to the game for the solo player, but like most games of this sort youll really only want to grab this game if you regularly play with others.

Developer Piotr Skalski is quickly building a reputation for junky games that are so cheap that you almost dont care that theyre junky. Heres another one. Its two bucks. You battle ragdolls until one of you is out of health. You can fight the CPU or take on another player in local multiplayer. There looks to be a number of different characters, so I guess thats something. You unlock them by spending coins that you earn by playing. Its quite unpleasant to play, but if you are drunk enough and broke enough you might be able to squeeze a few laughs from it.

Apparently there were still a few games not on sale. That error has been corrected. As far as todays list goes, there are a couple of points of interest. Those weird Atari games, for example. The Missile Command one is alright, I guess. Fuser! Thats really new, and its surprising to see it with such a deep discount already. Cool game for music fans. VA-11 Hall-A is a great adventure game, if you dont already own it. The TakeOver is really nice at half-price. Other than that, its mostly the usual suspects. Dont let that stop you from looking through the list, however. You may as well check the weekend outbox while youre at it.

Thats all for today and this week, friends. It was a busy one! I had to write a lot of dollar signs and decimal points. There were lots of neat games, and too many cool sales. Im sure weve all fattened up our backlogs at least a little as a result. But what if I told you that were not out of the woods yet? Yes, next week will have many more new games, some of which look very promising indeed. I hope you all have a nice weekend, and as always, thanks for reading!
