Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 22nd, 2020. In todays article, we take a look at the several new games that hit the eShop today. Some interesting ones, to be sure. Theres also a massive list of new sales to look at, which feels impossible given how many games were already on sale. But no, life finds a way. Thats about all thats going on today, so were going to stick to the basics. Such is the holiday season, friends. Lets scope it out!
SwitchArcade Highlight!
WayForwards goofy take on the beat-em-up classic makes its return in this new Switch version of Double Dragon Neon. Its an odd take on the franchise, as its very much a serious brawler but one with its tongue jammed pretty hard into its cheek. Its not quite as slick or playable as Streets of Rage 4, but for an eight-year-old game that hit in the middle of a serious dry spell for the genre, its still quite a bit of fun. Its even more fun with a friend, but you can only pull in a second player locally. Given the state of the online play in the computer version, perhaps thats for the best.
I was going to make a cheeky comment about this being everyones story in 2020, but no, this is actually a game about COVID-19. Oh sorry, VIRUS-19". You have to survive through a seven-day quarantine in Lockdown City. Buy needed supplies, maintain social distances, and above all, wash your hands. Talking to NPCs could make you sick, so be careful and manage your life carefully using the handy Gov Phone. I get what this is going for and Im sure in hindsight a life sim about this mess might be interesting, but in the here and now I cant imagine any kind of game I would like to play less than this.
Everyone loves a good giant robot battle, so Override gets off on the right foot with its set-up. The original game suffered from being a bit slower and clunkier than even huge mechs should be, but it picked up plenty of fans anyway. Theyll likely be happy to see this sequel, which promises new mechs, new features, and an overall bigger and better experience. Battle bots in a variety of arenas either on your own in career mode or in multiplayer action for up to four players. I think its safe to say that if you enjoyed the first game on Switch, youll probably like this follow-up. Otherwise, I would wait and see how things shake out once people have put more time into it.
The main gimmick behind this 2D platformer is that your main character has been sucked into the popular TV shows of a streaming service. A novel enough premise, but the game itself is rather ordinary. Romp through five worlds, each based on a rather well-known Netflix series. Theres Peculiar Stuff! And Elder Thrones! Well, you get the idea. Each world features several levels and a boss or two, making for a fairly substantial adventure in the end. The game also introduces new gimmicks with each world, which helps keep things fresh. There are lots of things to collect, and a fair bit of unlockable goodies to get by collecting those things. Nothing particularly new here for platforming fans, but its not bad on the whole.
The fluffy catgirl adventures continue in Nekopara Vol.4, in which the catgirls encourage Minaduki to take a break from the stress of work and the ongoing conflict with his disapproving father. That means hot springs! And a trip to France to see his old teacher! Naturally, this leads to meeting another catgirl in France as Minaduki continues down his inevitable road to being a crazy old cat-geezer. Like the other games in the series, this is a visual novel with no real choices to make along the way. This Switch version is slightly naughty but leans more into saccharine sweetness by cutting out the adult stuff you can find in the computer version. About as substantial as cotton candy, but the series has a following for a reason. That reason is: catgirls.
The latest puzzle game from the fine folks at Lightwood, Roundout features the usual stuff you see in this developers puzzle games. You get tons of puzzles to solve, a rather spartan presentation, and lots of bad jokes. It works a lot like a previous game called Word Wheel where youre given a wheel of letters that you need to make words from. The difference here is that the words are laid out on a crossword-style arrangement. It gives you some visual feedback and also some vague idea of the length and number of words you should be able to find. Not much to say here beyond that. You probably already know if this is your kind of thing or not.
Farsights middling bowling game is apparently going for the yearly franchise thing, and Im not sure how well thats going to go. There are some new features here, including an online head-to-head mode, stepladder finals, improved physics, and some new balls to earn and use. Oh, and Andrew Anderson has been added to the line-up of real PBA pros. Ill be frank: Farsight was already on thin ice in my books with how everything went down with the Pinball Arcade, so Im not personally inclined to see this new venture of theirs through terribly far. The first game had some rough edges I assumed might be fixed in updates, and I suppose in a way thats just what this represents.
(North American eShop, US Prices)
Given how big the lists of new sales have been the last few updates, I really didnt expect to see this many more when I started the article today. Here we are, though. Some notables from the list: 2D skateboarding game OlliOlli, the rather enjoyable Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time, the Cook, Serve, Delicious! games, and a whole mess of Capcom games. As for the outbox, while certainly big its about as packed as it can get with what I tend to refer to as the usual suspects. I certainly wouldnt put a priority on any of it, but its your money.
