A Good Puzzle to Have for Vance Vice – 247Sports

Vance Vice has 13 returners on the offensive line. Of those, 11 have played significant snaps. Those 11 have combined for somewhere around 110 career starts (my math might have been off by a hair one way or the other).

There could be some attrition after the spring, but regardless, Vice has some legitimate options. It might be the best offensive line Virginia Tech has had since maybe the 2005 unit (Will Montgomery, Brandon Frye, young Duane Brown), although that team faltered at the end. If not then, maybe the lines that were opening up holes for the untouchables, Lee Suggs and Kevin Jones? My Virginia Tech offensive line memory is hazy for the 2000-2005 period, so if you have a differing opinion, feel free to chime in.

Regardless, the potential was obvious on paper starting last year. But now the Hokies have enough experience returning, led by LT Christian Darrisaw, that its fair to have very high expectations for this group. With an upgraded running back room and a returning starter at quarterback, talent should not be a huge issue at the skill positions. Its on the offensive line to open up the holes on the ground and give Hooker time to throw.

The biggest question now is what the lineup will end up being. Theres a lot of variables here. In fact, Christian Darrisaw starting at left tackle is probably the only guarantee right now. Vance Vice has a giant puzzle to sort out this spring (and into August, in all likelihood). Lets dig in.
